Inside the Warehouses: How and Where Your Cask Ages

    The Uncomplicated Version

Where your cask is stored affects both its maturation and your ownership experience. Each warehouse offers different strengths ranging from speed and accessibility to scale, atmosphere, and cost, so the best choice depends on what you value most. Below are four warehouse summaries for cask owners and collectors.

How a cask is stored plays a vital role in how your whisky matures. For private collectors, storage also shapes the overall experience of owning and monitoring your casks as they age. In this article, we’ll highlight several of the warehouses where Spirited and our clients store their casks, along with a few details that may influence which facilities you choose for your own collection.

Our purpose here is not to recommend one warehouse over another. We stand behind all of the partners we work with. However, the differences between them can matter a great deal depending on your preferences as an owner.

Note: Spirited does not receive any affiliate benefits or commissions from these recommendations.

    JD Spirits

Opening an account with JD Spirits is straightforward. Each new client receives a comprehensive and welcoming “open-door policy” letter when setting up an account. Spirited has completed re-racks, regauges, and sample requests through JD Spirits, all with consistently quick turnaround times.

JD Spirits uses Vapour, a whisky-warehouse client portal that gives collectors simple, detailed access to their stock.

JD Spirits is located in Perth, about a one-hour drive from both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

    V&C Warehouse

    VolpeCastello

During our partnership with VolpeCastello (V&C), the company has grown from a single-warehouse operation into an impressive and sprawling large-scale enterprise with three major sites. It now appears well on the way to becoming a comprehensive one-stop hub for whisky cask services.

Accounts can be opened free of charge and come with a thoughtful welcome kit. At the time of writing, their online client portal remains in beta but is expected to further streamline services soon. At their current size, the company’s scale is both a benefit and a temporary limitation. Services are generally excellent, though they may take slightly longer than smaller competitors due to the high volume of requests.

VolpeCastello is located in Glenrothes, roughly one hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

    Still Spirit Scotch Warehouse

    Still Spirit

Still Spirit shares a facility with Whisky Hammer, a well-known auction house near Scotland’s north-east coast. Although it is the most distant option from “central” Scotland on this list, it is worth the journey. The warehouse and the inviting environment and personnel makes for a warehouse that is as striking as a whisky warehouse can be, with every cask stored on racks for easy accessibility.

The facility has a relatively small storage capacity, which contributes to its attention to detail. We strongly recommend that every cask owner visit their cask at least once, and Still Spirit represents the level of quality and hospitality we hope all warehouses aspire to reach.

Their storage rate includes full insurance coverage and is proportional to the value of each cask. While this comes at a premium, we find it well justified.

Still Spirit is located in Ellon, about 25 minutes from Aberdeen or approximately three hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

    Lowland Bond Racking System

    Lowland Bond

Lowland Bond is a striking space, characterised by high ceilings and rows upon rows of racks that create the sensation of standing in a sea of casks. The entire operation seems designed for efficiency and throughput. Their custom-built racking system is so high, they need specially commissioned machinery to access casks atop of the highest racks.

Our experience with Lowland Bond is more limited than with the other warehouses listed, but every interaction so far has been excellent.

Lowland Bond is located in Glenrothes, roughly one hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow.
